Playing catch up, rockin' out.

Let's be brief. The move went well, but things have been busy and complicated since then. All-in-all I've been enjoying Portland and other parts of Maine that I've ventured to recently. To answer the question that my NYC friends have been asking: yes, there are bearded hipsters here, but no, they aren't all wearing flannel. I'll resume the good old music blogging funtimes here in a bit, but don't hold your breath on that just yet, as I've got some other business to attend to. A safe bet would be that in the Fall Subinev.com will get a makeover and kick into high gear with music reviews and live show coverage. Until then, I'll try to keep on top of using this space to point you to my activities elsewhere.

For now, one thing I'd like to direct your attention to is Have Faith In Worthless Knowledge - This is the official blog of SPACE Gallery (located at 538 Congress St. here in Portland, Maine.) Keep an eye out there for my photos and such.

Because I can't just post without any music update, a hot new track from my former neighbors in the band Goes Cube is up over at Earfarm today. Make that your summer jam. Oh, and don't forget to read what the band has to say about their (former) habit of naming songs with the numerical order in which they wrote them while you're there. Remember that time I interviewed them by asking random numbers as questions? Yeah, that was fun.

Last Weekend In NYC.

Here we are, kids. Down to Sub-Inev's last weekend in NYC. It's been about 9 years, but now it's time to move and the site is coming with me. As of this coming Monday, Subinev.com will be based in Portland, Maine, and so the focus will shift to the local music scene there (I mean really, there are about 8.3 billion other - much more frequently updated - music blogs based in NY these days anyway that love to navelgaze at the local bands, right?) and I hope you'll stick around to see what I have to share about it.

After The Jump Fest 2008 wrapup

Since our first event last August, all of us bloggers behind After The Jump have learned a thing or two about putting on a successful music festival. I think our CMJ and SXSW showcases (and unofficial parties) helped... but whatever it was, as good as our events have been over the past year, this weekend's all day festival in Williamsburg was by far the biggest success. We had 36 bands, 4 stages, and lots of happy music fans! Thanks to all the bands, sponsors, venues, and attendees!

Man In Gray. Two Nights Only.

So as you probably know, Man In Gray is my band. You probably also know that I'm moving out of NY soon and that the band is playing its last two shows this week. Tomorrow night is our official final blowout show at the Delancey, but we added a second-to-last show tonight. It's a Brooklynvegan show at Pianos, where we'll be sandwiched (appropriately?) between a few comedians and The Futureheads (who I'm a pretty big fan of - in fact they were one of the first bands that my later-and-now-former coworker at Somethin' Else, Nick, turned me onto, so there's a bit of a sentimental attachment I guess that ties in to the whole leaving Brooklyn thing for me personally. Not that you asked.) Details are here - get there early as there are limited tickets available at the door.

As for the big grand finale, that's tomorrow (Thursday, June 19, 2008). The Delancey is at 168 Delancey St in NYC. We're playing with Zero Spanish, Gold Streets, and Mancino. It'll be a special one.

ATJ Bands Around The Blogs

The bands playing this Saturday's After The Jump Fest in Brooklyn sure are keeping busy! I interviewed Ponytail (the headliners of our Music Hall of Williamsburg Noise Stage) for Ruined Music Backstage, but some of my fellow NY music bloggers have really been working hard to make sure that you can learn a lot about all of the bands playing. Check it out:

Not only did Pat make a comprehensive mix of the bands playing the Fest for you, but he's also been profiling (and in many cases, interviewing) bands like crazy. After The Jump Fest Schedule / Antlers free EP!

We've got the flyers (full schedule included) for the After The Jump Fest in Williamsburg on June 21. I'm really impressed with and proud of the lineup we've put together. Check it out!

One of the bands playing (the North 6th Stage @ 3:30pm) is the Antlers, and to promote the show, they've put together a free EP called New York Hospitals that you can download here. Pat has the exclusive premier on the recordings, including links to the invidual tracks.

Braking The Cycle Benefit Concert Tomorrow

Tina from Man In Gray has an event tomorrow that you should check out. She (with her team, The Rims) is raising funds for the LGBT center's HIV/AIDS programs through Braking the Cycle. Tomorrow (Tuesday, June 2rd, 2008) they are having a benefit concert at The Delancey (168 Delancey, btw Clinton and Attorney) in NYC, doors at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $10 and ALL OF THE PROCEEDS GO TO THE LGBT CENTER.

Performers include Butch & Bellie With Specal Guest Kaylamodda Olive!, Wilde Turkey, Phoebe and the Airforce, and the fabulous M.C. Glenn Marla and Lady Luck who will be doing some burlesque. It's the Delancey, so of course there are drink specials: $3 PBRs all night, $2 off everything from 8 pm - 9 pm and we'll also do $2 off everything from 11:30 pm - 12:30 am. Plus DJs, a kissing booth, brownies and dancing all night. Sounds pretty fun.

As another part of their fundraising efforts, The Rims are also doing a Fugazi covers album, which is pretty awesomely approved by the members of the band. From the bands participating, it's looking like the final album will be pretty interesting, for sure.

Smokey's Roundup Tonight @ Sound Fix: FREE!

I wish I'd been able to do more about promoting this, but with planning to move soon and a number of other things coming up (After The Jump, MiG shows, being unemployed and diving back into the freelance world) it's sort of slipped through the cracks.

But come out tonight and enjoy some top-notch Western swing music from Smokey's Roundup: Smokey Hormel (from Tom Waits, Beck, Smokey & Miho, etc) and friends at Sound Fix. I'll be sipping a pickletini and I suggest you do the same. If nothing else, come out and help me celebrate my last day at CMJ (which is tomorrow!).

The show is at 8pm tonight, and it's free!

Union Hall Victory!

The Community Board 6 meeting last night at the Brooklyn Borough Hall court room (which is a pretty amazing looking building, by the way) was long and full of tension for a lot of people in the crowded room, as we all waited (not always so) patiently for the board to arrive at the issue of Union Hall's liquor license on the night's agenda (get some background info here). Luckily, the voting went in Union Hall's favor (specifically, against the motion to refuse the bar's liquor license renewal), with a further motion to act in support of the venue, as a majority of the community board members expressed their support of it as an asset to the neighborhood. Some tense moments, harsh words, and passionate speeches (both for and against) made for a really interesting meeting, which was followed by a show of support outside the doors of the court house by friends of Union Hall, as the board members exited.

Defend Brooklyn (Nightlife): Save Union Hall

Tomorrow (Wednesday, May 14) could change Brooklyn nightlife as we know it.

Community Board 6's advisory board lead by Lou Sones (the owner of Brazen Head) is taking action against Union Hall of Park Slope. They are recommending the removal of their liquor license based on a group of about 5 people from Union street, with no facts generated to prove any violations. I repeat... THEY ARE TRYING TO TAKE AWAY UNION HALL'S LIQUOR LICENSE WITHOUT A SINGLE VIOLATION! If this is allowed it could set a chain-reaction through the night life scene. If they can deny the renewal of a liquor license for an establishment with no violations they will be able to close down anyone they like.

DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN!

The General Board will be meeting on this and other matters at the address and time listed bellow. Show up in numbers with signs stating your support for Union Hall and Brooklyn Nightlife. The press will be there and we have to put the pressure on

Mountain Goats Poll And Ticket Giveaway!

This Friday, May 16, The Mountain Goats will be playing an AIDS benefit show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple in Ft. Greene. This is a great venue to see any show, but this special event is sure to be incredible. The lineup also includes John Oliver (from Comedy Central), Rock Plaza Central, The Gotham City Girls Roller Derby, and much more. Click "more" on this post for the full details.

Ruined Music is back, now with more Dark Meat

I've been a little crazy over Athens' Dark Meat ever since I saw them at SXSW in March, so it' fitting that we chose them as the first band to take part in a new feature over at Ruined Music. We're calling it Ruined Music Backstage, where we ask bands to confess their ruined music secrets (and get them to tell us about their cats, too).
