A mid-March update

Hey lingering readers of Subinev!

I'll be heading down to Austin, Texas for the annual South By Southwest Music Festival next week. If you're going, make sure to check out the two awesome After The Jump Fest events that we've got going on. I'm personally super excited to have Superdrag playing one of our shows (not to mention all the other great acts)!

Say hi if you'll be at the festival, I'll be running around taking photos all week!

As always, in case you've missed my last few updates on here, keep up with me on Flickr, HillyTown, Have Faith In Worthless Knowledge, and (if you're feeling extra concise) Twitter.

Also, check out the website I just built for the Maine Film Center!

Ta ta for now.

Clearly, Subinev has entered a very long state of hibernation.

You can find me being much more active in the following places:

HillyTown.com: Portland, Maine show listings and music blog. Some food reviews, too!

Have Faith In Worthless Knowledge: SPACE Gallery's blog about related events and the arts. I post a lot of concert photos there.

Flickr/subinev: My obsessively updated photostream. Concerts, people, places, food, and, of course, cats.

more to come...

In the meantime, here is a robot playing a flute.

Up The Empire still have so much to say

It's record release day for Up The Empire! Their new ep, Loose Ends, is out today on The Cougar Label. I've been excited about this band for a while now, and one of my favorite things about them was when they launched into a spot-on amazing live cover of Dinosaur Jr.'s "Feel The Pain" at a house party that my band was playing with them last year. As you may know, I am certain that it is the best song ever written. Well, they did a studio version of the track and included it on this 4 song ep. It makes me happy. You can check it out now on iTunes if you're impatient.

For those of you in NYC, the release show is tomorrow (Wednesday, December 17th) at Mercury Lounge. As usual for release shows it looks like they'll be dragging out some friends and surprises for the occasion. Can somebody tall stand up front with a camera and heckle them for me? It'll be just like I'm there!

Bruce Fest 2008

Though I've never been a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen (something about growing up in Jersey and having it crammed in my earholes all the time) in recent years I've come to appreciate his music (thanks, Jared).

This weekend was the Boss's birthday, and as it turns out there's an annual Bruce Fest right here in Portland, where local musicians come together to celebrate his music through their own interpretations. The event took place at the disco-tastic Bubba's Sulky Lounge (light-up dancefloor in full effect!) on Saturday, September 27th. I wasn't there to shoot the event, I was there to drink cheap beer and dance. It didn't hurt that the bands playing included some top-notch local acts (some of which I mentioned in my last post). That said, you know I just can't help myself, here are a few slightly blurry shots from the trusty point-and-shoot!

An Evening With...

Metal Feathers (I'm super-stoked - wait, what? - to see them open for Dark Meat at SPACE this Thursday!)

I think that next year I just might have to participate somehow...

10 Bands From Maine That I Want You To Hear

In preparation for my trip back down to NYC last week, I put together a "Portland Primer" to introduce some of my friends to the jams that are currently being crammed in my earholes thanks to my new northern locale. If you'd like to be mailed a copy (it's a mix cd, not a playlist, we're kicking it old school these days) please let me know and I will send you one. Here's a quick overview (which mostly relates to the mix) with some quick and easy comparisons, for convenience.

The Rattlesnakes - riyl Rainer Maria, the angsty lo-fi frenetic 90's
Huak - riyl Fugazi, very tall men
Cougars Kill Cobras - riyl the self-titled Liars record, Richard Simmons
Lady Lamb The Beekeeper - riyl Fiery Furnaces, Neutral Milk Hotel, candy
Metal Feathers - riyl Pavement, Muggabears, skreeeeee!
South China - riyl El May, the woods
Adam Kurtz - riyl Grandaddy, Sufjan Stevens, vodka
Honey Clouds - riyl Silver Jews, beards
Elf Princess Gets A Harley - riyl Jonathan Richman, Jens Lekman, nipples
Cursillistas - riyl the world unfolding around you, slowly

A few of these will be in NYC soon! Check it and go see them if you can, bands from Maine don't seem to get down there often enough:
Saturday, Sept. 27 @ Pete's Candy Store: Adam Kurtz (playing with Jared Friedman/Holy Moly, from Man In Gray!)
Thursday, Oct. 2 @ Spike Hill: Lady Lamb The Beekeeper
Friday, Oct. 10 @ Kenny's Castaways (MEANY Fest): Cougars Kill Cobras

Bonus! Here's one more band to check out: Feel It Robot. You know I've gotta love a band with robot in their name!

I wish I could be there, this should be really fun. Despite rumors, I do not actually live in Canada now. Close, but not quite.

That weekend is actually a busy one here in Portland, Maine, with Dark Meat blowing through town with their confetti-sprinkled-psych-stravaganza at SPACE and then a couple days of good times with Tod's photos and the Japanther/Matt & Kim show. Yowzers!
