a Midnight Special from Jelly | Main | Only because you asked for it
Because I am a moron and forgot to bring my winter coat back from New Jersey with me (it was so warm I didn't even wear it there so it sat in a closet the whole week!) it was mailed back to me via FedEx. I ended up waiting all day and got the package around 7pm, causing me to miss David's solo show at the Living Room. So I was cranky. But I finally got out and made a quick stop at Etherea to use some of that Christmas money to pick up a few much needed discs - that Sun Kil Moon album of Modest Mouse covers (which is pretty much all that I hoped it would be), a coupld GoGoGoAirheart albums (to catch up because I've gotten hooked on them at the record shop), and the Fiery Furnaces' new one that I had been holding off on for a while but finally had to give in. It's a little weird but very much them and very right. After the music splurge I made my way over to Mo' Pitkins, a classy looking joint that I've walked past many times but never been in before. As I mentioned in my last post, I was there for the new Jelly NYC even - the Midnight Special. Sort of like an "Unplugged" for local bands. The bands for this debut were Surefire and the Summer Lawns. Conveniently enough, I've been meaning to check both bands out for quite some time now (and Summer Lawns are actually in frequent rotation on my ipod, sometimes by my doing but often just by the powers that shuffle). From what I'd heard and seen recorded of Surefire before I honestly wasn't expecting too much more than a good rock band - I knew they were pretty good and very young, but during their (mostly) acoustic performance I was amazed - these guys have the songwriting skills and knack for harmonies and witty stage banter that you'd think it takes a long career to develop. Then Summer Lawns were like something out of a movie - both the sound and the look, it's all very classic feeling, the sort of thing that you don't think that anybody just comes up with and decides one day, but more like they were written into the background of scene in a David Lynch film and decided to come out and take over the story. Don't miss them. Both bands have a few shows coming up in the city soon. Check their sites. So it was a good end to a good year. Good for music, good for making friends and art and projects and good for being generally happy about what's going on and where things are at (with the little exception of having to move and stupid landlords.) So have a happy new year, everyone! The first three months of 2006 are going to be quite a whirlwind of music for myself (already on my plate I've got one show I organized, a huge concert I'm performing in, probably three local MiG shows before our first two week tour, and hopefully one solo/maybe duo show - not to mention comtinuing work on the MiG full length) but also for shows to go see - friends are releasing their records and bands are reforming and playing shows (Volcano Suns! Bush Tetras! wowzers!) and I'm excited for everything and can't wait to see how it all turns out. That's it. I'll have some sort of "Best of 2005" thing on the way soon probably. Don't hurt yourself. (by the way, here's another very good option for tonight's festivities...)
