Mikey beat me to it, but I was going to do a big post about Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, who I saw open for Jonny Lives at Mercury Lounge a little while back. Jonny Lives were absolutely unremarkable, but Margot... were fantastic in a dramatic BSS sort of way. If you get a chance to see them live definitely do so. Keep an eye on the percussionist and his giant gong. They do a cute trick with the lights too, going from darkness onstage to supernova over the course of their set. In other music thoughts - here is me being totally snobbish and judgemental. 1. new YYY's - fairly boring aurally, but I might come to like it a little bit. It'll take time though. Cant you tell that I've given up hating them? It was just too much effort for such a silly cause - plus after that first ep Karen started to sing more and more with each song. Last bits: nO Things and Knife Skills (notorious for the best press photos ever) got tracks written up in Pitchfork. They're touring the US together. Go them. Finally, MiG is gearing up for the March tour. It's going to be a lot of long drives and sleeping on floors. I need to buy a sleeping bag. Keep up with shows and stuff on our myspace page. Oh and anybody in Chicago - we're playing at the Metro on 3.23. That's a pretty big deal so tell your friends to come out. There's an afterparty too so email me if you want the info on that. By the way thanks to all the blogging folks who have been talking about Man in Gray lately, it's all very nice of you. There's a new interview with us up at Random Apes.
2. new Liars - they can do no wrong if you ask me. It sounds pretty much like the last one, minus the witch theme. More song-y though, at times.
3. the Editors really suck. Have people noticed this? I finally listened to the advance of their cd the other day because I keep seeing their ads but it was like bad Interpol or the Killers. Plus one of their songs rips off that Bravery song pretty much note for note. Good job there, buckos.
4. O'Death are better and more interesting and make way better art than any 'cool rock band' out there. I just got their new cd in the mail and it's quite a treat.
5. I don't know who Oh No! Oh My! are but somehow I ended up with one of their mp3s and I like it because it reminds me of Moldy Peaches - style storytelling with a bit of Unicorns/Islands or Bearsuit quirkiness to the music.
6. the new Pretty Girls Make Graves tracks that I've heard are super slick sounding. That's alright and all, but there's definitely less of a bite to their music than there used to be. The additional keys and more sweet female vocals are a nice touch though.
7. I have a feeling that the new Rainer Maria record will sound a lot like their last one, judging from what little I heard. There's nothing wrong with that at all though. They're adorable.

O'death are brilliant aren't they? The album doesn't hold a candle to their live show though. And I must say the same holds for Editors. I wasn't the biggest fan of their album and then I saw them live and it all clicked. In person the lead singers voice doesn't sound at all like Interpol as well.
And ps, I'm Laura's friend Jen from school- hey there.

yeah unfortunately i haven't gotten a chance to see O'Death live yet. i know i really need to.
I've gotta be stubborn about the Editors - at this point it feels like just another band that sound like all the other ones that are being thrown in my face every day, so I don't really see any reason to pay attention to them when I could just go listen to Interpol (or if I'm in a more indie-minded mood, the next in line for the crown of NYC moody rock - The Secret Life of Sofia) if that's what I want to hear?
Plus it's one of those cases where they're being promoted SO HEAVILY that it just makes me dislike them from the get-go, but at least I gave them a chance and listened to the whole record this time! Plenty of others don't even get that much attention.
And howdy, nice to meet ya.
