09:27 AM - Contraband!

I'm not really a fan of math rock or metal or any of that such stuff, but Cinemechanica found some way to slip through the cracks into the realm of jaw-dropping awesomeness. I took the Canadians to Southpaw to see Mussels (sorry dudes, no good photos this time) and Brandon and John insisted that I stick around to see the two acts going on after them - both of which apparently would be the same band, but very different shows.

The first thing you'll notice about Cinemechanica is that their drummer sets up in the front of the stage with lights from below that give him this insane futuristic robot man machine look when he plays. Once the band starts, the number of notes and the precision with which they're shot directly at your earholes goes from "HOLY CRAP" to "OH MY GOD" to "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON" to "DON'T EVER LET THIS STOP!"

As impressive as Cinemechanica were to watch, I think that most of the crowd was waiting for their transformation. After a blistering assault of a set, the band turned right around and set up a projector and screen onstage and brought out two dudes dressed in just the right Contra (yes, the video game) playing gear, and became CONTRABAND! The two headbanded dudes sat on the floor and beat the game without using the cheat code, while the band PLAYED THE SOUNDTRACK. It was surreal and entirely geeky but so totally amazing. The guitarist even had that ending 'boom boom whoomp whoomp whoooosh" sound that happens at the end of every level on his Loopstation and he'd hit it at just the right time, as the wall crumbles and the guys run through it. Perfect. That's the kind of show I want to watch. If you can, please make it out to see this show.

Also, they apparently have another alter-ego, as Megaband. Yup. They play the soundtrack to Megaman 2. I really need to see that. Bring that show to Southpaw!
