11:03 AM - Beck blows minds

Last night as I was closing up the record shop I threw on Beck's One Foot in the Grave. It's a record that I bought on a trip to New Hope, PA with my parents some time in the mid-90's. I remember finding that and Stereopathetic Soulmanure in a really weird little record shop that was far more bohemian than anything I was accustomed to at the time. On the ride home I listened to the cd's on my personal cd player, giggling to myself over the dirty words and being amazed at these new sounds I was hearing - even having already been a fan of "weird" music for a couple of years.

Over ten years later and as the record was blaring from the shop speakers (not the best setup for listening to music, especially for a record shop, but we make due) a boy walked by and stopped in front of the open door. He stood there and leaned forward, sticking his head in the doorway. His face was all confusion, aliens seemed to be whispering in his ears. I said "Hi." No answer.

"How many records are playing?" asked the boy.

What kind of question is that?

"Just one," I said.

He was silent for a minute. Then "It's not two?"

I wasn't sure what he was asking.

"Not two records playing? This sounds like more than one - I thought two, maybe even three or four!" And started to back away, looking even more shocked.

"It's Beck." I said.

The boy stared at me and stumbled away, shaking his head in disbelief.

Beck blows minds.

(I believe it was "Ziplock Bag" that was playing at the time, for the curious.)
