12:22 PM - old versus new

Yesterday I got two new records. The Obliterati by Mission of Burma and A Hundred Miles Off by The Walkmen. One just might be the best rock album of the year (so far at least) and the other might have been a waste of money that I probably should have just downloaded. Can you figure out which is which?

More later.

update: my full review of the Obliterati and the "Robotinev" of Mission of Burma is here.

I'm pretty sure, knowing you, that The Walkmen gets the big thumbs down. At least, I hope that's the case. Cause they are sort of terrible.

I saw one of the Walkmen in a drugstore once. I wanted to tell him that he was overrated, but he was buying toothpaste and it didn't seem appropriate.

I'm assuming you, like most people, like the MoB album, but yoinks, I wish they had worked on the vocals a little longer or something. Everything else sounds great, but then one of 'em starts singing and I skip to the next track.

i've always enjoyed the Walkmen, but this drastic Dylan-ism that has suddenly come about really puts me off.

i just got my MoB 12" singles in the mail with the etched backs - wow.

I am part of the MOB subscription series, but the 12'' singles have not come yet. The CD singles are great though. I was hoping both The Walkmen and MOB's new album would be great. But if you didn't like one, its proabably The Walkmen, 'cause The Obliterati is amazing.

I got the Obliterati cd (which I pre-ordered with the subscription deal) a day before the vinyl. The cd's came a while back and I've been enjoying them but having the whole cd is somehow even more exciting. The vinyl is so cool - it's worth the wait. Trust me.

I'll give the Walkmen some time before saying I dont' like it - but I just haven't gotten a good first taste after two listens. We'll see if I warm up to it.
