10:46 PM - The Upwelling / Baltimore

It's been a while since I've seen The Upwelling play a show, so it was odd that despite having gone on tour in Europe with The All-American Rejects and playing various high-profile gigs here in the states, my latest encounter with them was at a benefit show in an art space in Baltimore.

Ari of the Upwelling

Despite limited technical resources at the venue and a long set up time, the trio played a fantastically tight set that somehow transformed the nondescript space in which they were playing into a gigantic stadium with a huge sound. Maybe not quite that extreme - but the point is that they made the best of a not-so-perfect sound situation and really came across very nicely. Ari played a few songs solo while the other two set up in the beginning and his voice was surprisingly strong.

Josh and Conor of the Upwelling

After the show we went on a hunt for good cheap seafood in Baltimore, and what we found was decent food that was fairly reasonable (I had a crab quesadilla) but with really slow service. At least it gave us all a good chance to catch up, as the last couple times we shared a stage were a bit more hectic (an insane loft party in Bushwick a couple years ago and a last minute show in the Knitting Factory Main Space.)

I can't seem to find any downloadable tracks, so you'll have to make due with a myspace link to hear the Upwelling. Enjoy.

The band will be touring in the coming months to Cleveland, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, DC, and Virginia. Be sure to see them if they'll be in your town.
