12:47 AM - A tentative and not at all comprehensive CMJ schedule

Here's my current wishlist of CMJ shows to check out next week. I know I probably won't make it to most of them, but just imagine if I did! Some shows are left out intentionally for one of three reasons: 1 - I hate the venue and refuse to go there no matter what, 2 - it's already sold out and I don't want to go bad enough to fight my way in, 3 - logistically impossible due to being at the same time as a show I can't miss (like, well, the one I'm playing in two bands at on Wednesday).

Let me know what I missed that you think I should consider. Also, this list is so far just the official CMJ shows. I know there's a lot more going on (I'll add those in later), but let's start with this.

Tuesday, Oct. 31
1pm Black Hollies @ Day Stage
7:30pm Pink Noise @ Makor
8pm Peter and the Wolf @ Knit Tap Bar
8pm Bush Tetras @ Crash Mansion
8:30pm Finian McKean @ Pete's (non-CMJ)
8:45pm the Muggabears @ Midway
9pm Monsters Are Waiting @ Pianos
10pm Birdmonster @ Pianos
10:15pm One Umbrella @ Northsix Downstairs
12am Hot IQs @ Midway
1am Gorch Fock @ Trash
Hot IQs are the most likely for me to actually see, which is good since they are high up on my "must see" list. If I get going a little earlier I hope to catch Monsters Are Waiting - more out of curiosity than anything else.

Wednesday, Nov. 1

2pm O'Death @ Day Stage
3pm Dr. Dog @ Day stage
7:20pm The Giraffes @ STudio B - 259 Banker St Brooklyn NY
8pm Serious Business Records showcase: DraculazombieUSA, The Two Man Gentlemen Band, the Octagon, Kickstart, Unsacred Hearts, Man in Gray @ Knit Old Office
10pm Read Yellow @ Midway
10pm Professor Murder @ Pianos
12am The Fatales @ Union Pool
DO NOT MISS O'Death. That's the best advice I can give you. CMJ this year looks like it will be a big moment for them and after this point they just might disappear on tour forever, so please do not miss them! This is just one of many shows they're playing all week. I still can't believe this is the same band who surprised me by handing me the best hand-made press kit that I'd ever seen while I was cavorting under an assumed identity in a weird bar with no liquor license (mostly true). Of course if the big Serious Biz show wasn't going on, I'd be going insane at either Midway or Pianos (but you know what? you can catch both those bands at plenty of other shows during the week).

Thursday, Nov. 2
8pm Proton Proton @ Trash
8pm Nicole Atkins & the Sea @ Mercury
9pm The Awkward Stage @ Union Hall
9:30pm Born Ruffians @ Lit
10pm Novillero @ Union Hall
11pm Goes Cube @ the Delancey
11:30pm Lewis&Clarke @ Knit Old Office
11:30pm Bling Kong @ Fontana's
11:30pm Earlimart @ Northsix
11:45pm Silversun Pickups @ Pianos
12:30am Aloke @ Northsix Downstairs
12:30am Dark Side of the Cop @ Knit Old Office
I just don't know what to do. Too many great options. That 11:30 trio will most likely be a tossup between the Knit and Fontana's - if I'm in the mood for an over-the-top insane choose your own adventure rock opera, I'll go see Bling Kong. If I want mellow, mind-altering man and his guitar music, then Lewis&Clarke it is.

Friday, Nov. 3
6pm Excepter @ Hiro Ballroom
6:45pm Mary Timony @ Hiro Ballroom
7:45pm Judah Johnson @ Knit Tap Bar
7:45pm Erase Errata @ Hiro Ballroom
8:30pm Palomar @ the Delancey
8:45pm Deerhoof @ Hiro Ballroom
8:45pm Eric Gaffney (of Sebadoh) @ R+R
9pm The Secret Machines @ Warsaw
9pm the Black Angels @ Nokia Theater
9:15pm The End of the World @ Knit Tap Bar
10pm Beauty Pill @ Knit Tap Bar
10pm O'Death @ the Delancey
10:30pm Division Day @ Union Hall
10:45pm Bound Stems @ Knit Tap Bar
11pm The Big Sleep @ Pianos
11pm The Morning After Girls @ Arlene's
11:30pm George Clinton @ Crash Mansion
12am The Grates @ Bowery
12:30am Parts + Labor @ Tonic
Hiro Ballroom and the Knit Tap Bar are the likely candidates for my evening.

Saturday, Nov. 4
12:30pm Dead Betties @ Rebel
2:45pm The Chinese Stars @ Rebel
8pm Erik Friedlander @ Rockwood Music Hall
8pm Cody Chesnutt @ Canal Room
8:45pm Via Audio @ Pianos
9pm Takka Takka @ the Delancey
9pm the Secret Machines @ Warsaw
9pm The Fall @ Hiro Ball room
9:30pm Cities @ Arlene's
9:30pm Morning Theft @ Maxwells
10pm The Willowz @ Rebel
I really want to see Cody Chesnutt but I'm not sure what I'll go with yet - I might end up on the PATH train.

Every year it seems like there are a few bands that just completely take over (depending on who you ask and what their URL is) during and after CMJ - who is it going to be this year? My predictions (for NY bands, at least) are O'Death and Pela. Any others?

man that's a lot more ambitious than my list. hopefully see you at the monsters in waiting show. you should try and catch beach house on wednesday, if not, they'll be back later at tonic.

hah yeah i know it's a little unrealistic but if i could make it to all those i would.

beach house sound interesting but their show has two strikes against it - 1 it's at cake shop and i don't go there and 2 they're on at the same time as the Unsacred Hearts, not to mention I'll be getting ready to play with MiG at 11:15 anyway

when are they at tonic?

posted by: bryan at October 28, 2006 10:16 AM

they're at tonic on november 26th
