10:28 AM - CMJ day 2 recap

O'Death performing at the CMJ Day Stage - 11/1/06 - photo by Bryan Bruchman
Seeing O'Death performing in what is little more than a walkway inside Lincoln Center that is being used as the CMJ Day Stage, with the sun shining bright just over their heads - that was how I spent my lunch hour yesterday. How about you? The crowd at this performance had some interesting behavior - forming a disinterested-looking line against the far wall from the stage, with a crew of photographers (who were giving me serious camera envy, oh goodness) crouched about 5 feet in front of them just below the harsh glare of the sun coming through the window. Then about 10 feet from there to the band. Though their sound would place them more appropriately in suspicious basement venues and backwoods shacks, they've had to adapt lately for even stranger (if by strange you mean the Spiegeltent) venues as their success has grown (exponentially in the last few months). You can still see O'Death one more time - tomorrow at 8pm the Delancey. Subinev favorites Palomar are also on the bill.

Last night was all about one thing for me and most of my friends - the first ever Serious Business CMJ Showcase! It was really exciting to see so many people come out to see all the bands last night! Travis deserves a cookie or a round of applause for not only running the record label and recording studio, but for putting himself out there so much with the bands - last night he played drums with DraculaZombieUSA, the Unsacred Hearts, the Two Man Gentlemen Band, and even made a tambourine cameo with Man in Gray. Fantastic. Tina and I also pulled double duty, early in the show with DZUSA and then of course closing it out with Man in Gray. Luckily the couple of hours between the two was enough time to regain some energy after the aerobic workout that comes from 31 minutes of non-stop movement.

Thanks to everybody who came out to the show - but sorry to anyone without a badge who they turned away at the door - the show sold out early and after that point they just wouldn't sell any more tickets (only CMJ badge holders could get in) so people were being kept out of the show after the first couple bands. Advice to bands playing the Knitting Factory Old Office? If you're on a bill that might sell out (not hard - it's a small room) aim to play earlier rather than later.

Aside from the door annoyances, the show was great and it's been so exciting to see Serious Business grow up (there's a banner now!) from its humble beginnings. I think next year will be really good...

Tonight on the CMJ horizon? Hard decisions. Bling Kong, Lewis and Clark, Silversun Pickups, Stolen Transmission party? I'm just not sure yet... Other suggestions welcome. See you out on the streets.

i gotta get one of those magnets that everybody's been talking about!

and yes, serious business is awesome. yay everybody! (i'm on a cmj / sleep deprivation high)
