Subinev.com Holiday Party - Tonight at Union Hall! (and a contest) | Main | Beat Radio @ Union Hall - December 29th 2006
Well after a brief (um, one week isn't THAT long, is it?) time in New Jersey for all sorts of Christmas fun (including losing about 50 billion games of pool to my dad, locking the keys in the van, and seeing half the people I know in the state in one night) I'm back in Brooklyn for a few days (before heading to Boston for New Years.) What better time to tell you all about the show that I was promoting pretty relentlessly last week? First of all - Union Hall is amazing. I could hang out there forever eating and drinking and playing bocce. Oh right, and listening to bands. I don't know how they do it but the sound system in the live music room is pretty superb. The first act of the night was Tim Williams. It was too bad he had to go on so early and didn't get to benefit from the much bigger crowd that was there later, but he still played a great set and made a lot of new fans. I can't talk about his set without mentioning Mickela Mallozi, who backs Tim up and plays the keys and xylophone (or was that a glockenspiel?) - she does a lot of multitasking and contributes a lot to the big sound that comes out of just two people (with no drums!) For a little while I was worried that Alina Simone wasn't going to show up in time for her set, but shortly before Tim Williams finished up she arrived with Chris Barrey and John Lynch, who would play guitar and drums with her. Aside from Emma La Reina (which Chris was also in) I'd only seen Alina play guitar solo or with some sort of non-percussion accompaniment, so it was quite a change to see the same songs with more of a full band feel - and it was great. I can't wait for her record to come out (seriously, somebody out there with a label - SIGN THIS GIRL ALREADY!) As the night went on the room got more and more crowded and I saw a few people taking advantage of the mistletoe (thanks to Jess Jezel!) so by the time Mussels went on at the halfway point of the show everything was looking pretty good. It was another close call, as John had to be somewhere before their set and we were running on a tight schedule, but he got there in time and was ready to rock. They were pretty loud for the small room but it was under control. Sometimes I wish they would just go all out and destroy a stage or at least an amp, though I guess on a night like that when most of the equipment is shared that wouldn't be a good idea. Next time they play at a venue with a high stage (Southpaw, maybe?) I want to see some stage diving. Ok, people? Finally it was time for El Jezel. It was nice to see them play a set with a good crowd of (somewhat obsessive, maybe?) showing the support, even in a part of Brooklyn that they usually don't make it out to. This part of the night really started to feel quite cozy, and the decor of Union Hall can make it seem very much like home (maybe somebody else's, but still a home nonetheless) in times like that. Chris Barrey stepped up once again for his second guest appearance of the evening, joining El Jezel on their last two songs (one of which was "Michigan", and I swear that nearly brought the house down.) So thanks to all the bands, the two DJs Rob and Jenny (and I've gotta count myself in there too since Jenny and I kept a hot dance party going for a long time after the bands finished), and to Serious Busines Records and Dovecote Records for donating the prize packages that we gave away. We also gave away three Daytrotter shirts - one of which went to Tim Williams' brother, pictured here with friends (including Tim, who's hiding behind him.) Thanks so much to all the bands, DJs, sponsors, and people who came to the Subinev.com Holiday Party! Check out all of the photos here.

That was a fun night! You should throw another party, and soon! I'm working on plans for a blues rock/surf rock/oldies dance party...
