Hot Rocks party Tuesday | Main | another breakup: Pretty Girls Make Graves
Interesting promotion for a book - Submit your own mixtape tracklist for a chance to win an iPod, thanks to Rob Sheffield's Love is a Mix Tape. DJ Mojo has a new weekly show on Breakthru Radio called Maximimum Music. If you need to learn what's up in local music, that's that spot (plus some old goodies and treats from out of town, just like the shows he books). Get ready to load 'em up, kids. Not only did Matt beat me to posting about The Muggabears' new 7-song ep, Night Choreography, but he also posted the two tracks that I was going to. Read his very in-depth and handy review here. It's feeling more and more like the Muggabears picked up right where Emma La Reina left off and added a bit more Pavement and Sonic Youth-isms (like the almost spot-on Thurston vocals) and a touch of garage rock swagger. Palomar's next record, All Things, will be out March 20 on Misra Records. Here's a taste: The Shondes have been disgracing themselves all over the place in the short time that they've existed and they've got a ton of dates on the east coast in the coming months (plus Austin). They've got three new tracks on their myspace page for you to enjoy, here's a nice chanty one (I dig the violin)... The Hard Lessons (robotinev) cover "Hey Hey, My My" for the Langing Scene's Michigan tribute to Neil Young. Sounds interesting from this sample mp3 of the whole album. Aquarium Drunkard tells us that Yer Bird has announced the tracks to be included on their upcoming compilation, Folk Music For The End Of The World. On that list are new tracks by both Alina Simone and O'Death. Nice! News on more new music from Alina coming very shortly... Harlem Shakes (robotinev) are so excited about their debut EP coming out that they're having not one but two release parties for it (2/1 @ Canal Room and 2/2 @ Union Pool). Burning Birthdays is officially out February 6th and will be followed by a tour supporting Deerhoof! Click 'more' for dates. Harlem Shakes + Deerhoof tour dates
Palomar - "Our Haunt"
The Shondes - "Let's Go"
Dragons of Zynth (famously known as friends and cohorts of TV on the Radio - David Sitek produced their record) are probably a little crazy. Their live show is spastic and exciting, possibly even scary. See for yourself at their February residency (8th, 15th, 22nd) at Tonic in NYC. They've released a weird video for "Labor Day Lung" full of slow synth sounds and ringing tones and floating vocals. A lot of airyness to soak in but maybe just psychedelic enough to dig into. Here's the mp3 of that same song.
