Alina Simone signed, record out July 3 | Main | Beat Radio headline Union Hall tonight
As I said yesterday, last night Pela played a "secret" free show at Gravy, a restaurant in their (um, our) neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. They are preparing for some big shows and the upcoming release of their album, Anytown Graffiti. I'm always a fan of unusual venues, and this restaurant/bar cleared out just enough room in front of the fireplace for the band to set up, giving the show a cozy basement/hunting lodge feel that worked well with their music. It was pretty crowded and towards the end of the show Billy broke his guitar (you wouldn't expect them to be so rowdy from the sounds of their music, but trust me they can get pretty wild) and apparently somebody flipped the switch that shut off the fireplace exhaust, causing the room to get pretty smokey - most just assumed the bands energetic set had started a fire somewhere. It would be great if all shows could be like this, and I know the band enjoyed it, but in the future I have a feeling that seeing Pela play free shows to small crowds like this will become even more of a rarity.
