Sure Juror | Main | A Sunny Day In Glasgow / release show / Neon Lights tonight
Update: You can view all of my photos of The Muggabears and Sure Juror from this show in a handy little slideshow right here.
For all the talking I've done about the Muggabears in the past few months, you'd think that I'd at least get out to see them play, right? Well last time was the first night that was able to happen. They were the second act on the Battering Room-sponsored show at Union Hall and though I think they suffered a bit from the volume limitations of the space, by the end of the second song they built up some strong momentum that drove the rest of their set - all the way up to the point where Travis let out a blood-curling scream and collapse to the floor. Apparently he passed out (maybe you shouldn't wear a sweater onstage!) but he got up and went back to finishing the set. Impressive. Tonight is the final chapter of the big Muggabears weekend, when they play the Neon Lights party at the Delancey. One suggestion - a psychedellic light show. Make it happen!
As I said in my last post, I wasn't sure what to expect from Sure Juror. There's no question that they've got enough energy between the (now?) 7 members onstage to get any party going, but the strangest thing about them is how they manage to look like pop punk band with tight pants and fancy haircuts and twitching all over the stage, but then their sound seems to come from someplace else entirely - perhaps the circus. I like to imagine that they hang out with all the suburban emo kids at the mall and then go home and listen to their indie rock records and weird old folk tapes all night long. Whatever their inspiration, it's clear that Sure Juror know what they're doing and I think they have a good sense of where they can take it. One interesting thing was that the bassist was wearing a YANP shirt - of course that's not much of a surprise.
