Fulton Lights (Record release tonight) | Not going to Austin (PART 3) | Main | Who By Fire | Not going to Austin (PART 4)
I posted some photos and a brief writeup of the Slim Cessna's Auto Club set at Mercury Lounge last night over at the CMJ blog. One of the openers on this show was a band from Lexington, Kentucky called The Scourge of the Sea. Though this band had at least a few people talking about them, the crowd was pretty slim. You'd think half the music fans in NYC had gotten up and left - gee, I wonder where they went! However the band obviously had some friends in town, and they were cheering them on enthusiastically from the crowd - among them Jessica Kepler, who plays violin in Beirut and joined TSOTS on stage for a song. The band's sound is primarily is another take on that sort of slow-burning pop-informed indie rock that keeps getting more and more popular, with mutations in the form of the "new New York sound" (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Takka Takka) and a number of midwestern (Margot and the Nuclear So and So's) and Canadian bands (Stars). Traces back to Neutral Milk Hotel are more than a little apparent, but even moreso (and particularly with The Scourge of the Sea) I'd even say there's a lot of James Taylor going on - though perhaps it's because the lead singer doesn't look entirely UNlinke the man. The band has a few tour dates left, including a stop in their hometown tonight and upcoming shows in a couple of places that I know can be a lot of fun to play (Indy CD & Vinyl and The Comet Bar).
Upcoming The Scourge of the Sea tour dates:
03.16 - Lexington, KY @ Lexington, KY
03.22 - Cincinnati, OH @ The Comet
03.23 - Pendleton, IN @ WEEM Live Studio Performance
03.23 - Indianapolis, IN @ Indy CD & Vinyl In-Store
03.23 - Indianapolis, IN @ The Irving Theatre
03.24 - Chicago, IL @ Martyrs
