11:15 AM - Gold Streets, Western Civ @ the Annex | March 29, 2007; upcoming!
Western Civ came all the way from Alabama (actually they'd just been in North Carolina, but you get it) to open the show. Not the best slot for a band from out of town to play, especially when the two local bands they booked the show with initially aren't coming on until after a fourth act who was crammed in the middle of the show - but the boys from 'Bama gave it their all and proved that they've grown a lot since they were here last. Word is that their new album (I haven't gotten a chance to hear it quite yet) shows this off - particularly with the vocals - quite well. Look out for that. I've updated the show list with some choice shows over the next few weeks. Looks like Spring is kicking in and the good bands are all coming out to play. If you have a show or know of one I should know about, please let me know! I might have just missed it in the listings (I obviously don't list everything happening, just some of what I'd like to attend, in case you're wondering where the list comes from). Tonight? CAKEFIGHT! @ Siberia. Mussels official unoffical record release show @ Union Hall. Gabe the roomie @ Sunny's in Red Hook. A billion other shows! Go outside! 
I like Gold Streets' ep, Red, but it was their live show (back at the StereoactiveNYC BYP show) that really made me realize how exciting a band they were. The fact that they have a singing female drummer who can both SING and DRUM - at the same time! is probably enough to sway most people, but they work a delicate balance of chaotic noise, shoegazer spaciness, and hard dance beats that's just super tasty. They were totally on top of their game last night at the Annex and the crowd was feeling it (though a little more dancing could have turned the night into the crazy party it wanted to be).
