After The Jump was amazing! Thank you! | Main | Liars - Liars
It's a shame I had to wait so long to see Lariats, but I was just unable to make it to either of their first two shows. However quite a few friends did make it, and the word was pretty consistent that they were getting off to a very strong start. Here's what StereoactiveNYC had to say: "What impressed us both times was that it seemed like these four — Kristie, Marta, Nick, and Pete — had been playing together for years. Every note and beat found its pocket perfectly. But what’s really nice about seeing a band like this — new, yet experienced — is that it’s rare to hear a band both play their music with skill and confidence and not seem slightly tired of playing their material. It’s inevitable with most bands that by the time they’re actually really good at playing their first set of songs, they’re already tired of them. With Lariats, the usual divide between skill and freshness is simply non-existent. And that’s why you should check them out as soon as you can." It's true - there's a world of difference between seeing your friends get a band together only to go through that awkward phase of being pretty bad but having "so much potential" (side note/inevitable sElf reference: You don't give a damn about potential!) and seeing experienced players start something new without having to worry about learning how to remember songs and perform on stage. I've known members of this band for some time now, primarily from their previous efforts - The Song Corporation and Emma La Reina - two very different but somewhat kindred local bands. When Kristie (TSC) and Marta and Peter (ELR) to start a band, it made perfect sense (though it still looks weird to me to see them next two each other in the photos I took at this show). This show at The Creek And The Cave (yup, I went all the way to Queens to see a show, crazy, right? Of course I'm kidding, it was actually very convenient from work) was a good indication of what this band can do. Being a new band full of strong songwriting and undeniable musical skill (not to mention the nice balance of two guys / two girls) gives them a leg up on just about any other new group around - so let's see what they do with it. Unfortunately they don't have any recordings yet, nor have they announced more shows. When they do, you'll hear about it here. More photos from the Lariats show are here.
