The Denver-based Hearts Of Palm were, until recently, Nathan & Stephen. That band came from the remnants of the much-missed spastic-as-all-hell post-hardcore Refused-esque Black Black Ocean, of which Stephen and Jared were members. You thought I was going to say Nathan, didn't you? Hearts Of Palm are a far cry from the dancey punk skronk of BBO, and are more akin to something like The Hold Steady, staggering through a smelly bar with a horn section in tow. Though similar in voice and delivery to mister Finn's, the vocals here are more restrained and while just as weary and anthemic, sound more hopeful. The mix of dancier beats than you'd expect from that description of the music is what really keeps things moving, especially in a song like the just-released (or rather added to their Myspace player) and appropriately titled "Farewell Valentine." Check it out now. Once you're done with that, take the time to make your way through the rest of their available tracks, especially the interesting "Like You Don't Care," which sounds sort of like Spoon joining the Polyphonic Spree (which could have something to do with the fact that there are 9 people in Hearts Of Palm). Hearts Of Palm's new one, The Bridge EP (from which "Farewell Valentine" comes) will be released (for free) on March 1 with a (also free, and all ages) show at Illegal Pete's in Lodo, Denver.
