04:54 PM - announcements

MiG just booked their first Northsix show ever! We'll be opening for Troubled Hubble who are on Lookout! Records. Very exciting! It's on June 8th. Go here and buy tickets!

Also, it is very cold here in Brooklyn, and I am not enjoying that at all. Summer, where are you?

12:59 PM - remmber when...

Forget Cassettes! What? YES! Indeed! Even though Doni ran off with a bunch of meatheadesque-ADD-laden-destructo-freaks, Beth has managed to find two fine looking fellas to pick up where FC left off. I can't wait for them to make their way up here. Beth writes the bestest songs.

In not entirely related news, aside from the fact that I've always thought Forget Cassettes sounded quite a bit like them, Sleater-Kinney's new record, The Woods, is out. Of course I couldn't wait and I had to buy it... and it's a little insane. I haven't watched the live footage dvd that came with it (for no extra cost, apparently, that's nice of them), but the artwork and the fuzzy-psychedellic (there's an 11-minute jam on the record!) are a bit disconcerting at first for fans of S-K, but I think I (and the rest of you who love them) will get over it. Just listen to the single, "Entertain" first and you'll feel right at home (especially since the song has been a staple of their live set for a while now so you probably know it anyway.) Track-by-track review possibly eventually or at least theoretically.

For now, you can stream the record, watch the video for "Entertain", and download the "Entertain" mp3, though I certainly do suggest you just go out and buy the whole record.

12:32 PM - what's up with that?

Why didn't anyone ever tell me that someone I grew up with (and in 5th grade decided to name "Booze") was on that MTV show PoweR Girls? Look at Allie's bio. Hah.

05:20 PM - Matt Mahaffey + Beck = *drool*

Somebody buy me a plane ticket to Europe right now. Please.

Why?

Oh, I'll tell you why! The one and only Matt Mahaffey is touring with the one and only Beck Hansen (as drummer, percussionist, etc etc). I hope they do a US tour that way too... even though Self doesn't seem to really be, well, existing, these days, Matt playing with Beck would be a reasnably satisfying substitution (though how about Matt solo opening for Beck? THAT would be amazing...).

Ok that's all. Self is awesome. Beck is awesome. I'm a nerdy fanboy. Shut up.

01:54 PM - Take that, false icons.

The hot new record coming out tomorrow is, as you of course have heard possibly way too much about, is the new Gorillaz one, Demon Days. Since I've been sitting on it for about a week now, I figured the day before the release would be a good time to write about the actual record (like not videos, games, toys, or mp3 streams, you know?). Surely you agree. Click "MORE" to read my track-by-track review.

Also, Damon, Jaime Hewlett, and Danger Mouse will be doing in-stores this week. The NYC stop is Thursday, May 26th, at the Virgin Megastore, Union Square, 12-2 PM. I'll be there.

On a totally unrelated note, there's an M.I.A. media player thing up now so you can actually watch that 'Galang' video (and possibly more soon?) without me having to sign some stupid release just to post about it even though I'm not really into her (but surely there are some of you out there who are curious about it so I feel like I'm doing a public service or something.)

11:05 AM - no underground photo ban

Hey fellow NYC shutterbugs! You know that whole debacle about the plan to ban photography in the subway? Well forget about it! Not happening!

Read the NY Daily News article about it.

Now I can go back to taking pictures of sleeping bums and breakdancers and mariachi bands and depressed wall street dudes without fear!

11:14 AM - Last 4 Days of the Tank!

Well, they're moving to a temporary summer location, but still, The Tank, a really cool performance space near Times Square (and the only place that EMSO ever played a show!), is closing and the building is getting knocked down this weekend!

Tonight, Janeane Garofalo and Same Seder will broadcast the Majority Report live from the Tank, with guest Tim Robbins. Tomorrow Bishop Allen, We Are Scientists, and The Teeth will play while everyone gets trashed before watching the wrecking ball destroy the place.

Brooklyn Vegan has all the details.

10:45 AM - Come and get 'em!

So my logic has been that there are only 2,000 of these things being made, which isn't all THAT many, so theoretically if I DO post about it and help spread the word, they might sell out before I could get a shot at getting my hands on them for myself... but really I just can't afford them so I'm giving in and posting this - are you ready? Hope so. Here you go - pre-order the Gorillaz figures from KidRobot. Ok? Happy? While you're at it, order me a set. I'll gladly pay you the $150 over the course of the next 50 years. Hey that's not bad! Three bucks a year! I could do that!

But really, I want those toys. Shut up, I know I'm about 8. Ok maybe 10.

Oh and it's wednesday so you know what that means! There are a bunch of shows and things going on that I don't get to go to because I have stupid band practice! Yay! Seriously, friends in bands, stop booking shows on Wednesday nights (Like I should talk, our next show is a Wednesday!). For those of you who actually go out in the middle of the week (I do, but I prefer tuesdays), tonight you have some good options - The Song Corporation is at 169 Bar at 8pm and June Fool is at Death Disco (the Delancey) late. Or maybe midnight. I don't know. Just show up and hang out until they play. It's free and they're good.

Yikes! I almost forgot another show tonight! Probably because I neglected to put it in the show calender - Pela is having their release show at Mercury Lounge tonight! They play at 8:30 (so probably 9, so if you're very fast you could go from the Song Corp to Pela, go get some food, then see June Fool - come on, I DARE you to do it all!).

Since I probably won't think to post about it, tomorrow the Winter Pageant is playing Mercury at 9:30 for Tarantula's release show and Kinetic is playing Sin-e at 11pm.

Ah well since apparently this is a shows post I should mention Friday - the one and only Americans UK will be hanging out with strippers at the Pussycat Lounge. They play at 9:30 and you can pretty safely bet that there will be lots of tight pants, cool haircuts, and pointing at brains.

Guess what! Contests! Right here on Subinev! Coming soon!

Crazy, right?

10:25 AM - Art! Opening! Like a present! Indeed!

Tonight the event of choice is art. Yes, really. ART!

Ripped from Mill Whistle:

"Robert Szot gets his first gallery show in Chelsea, and it features the collaborative paintings he did with Cousin Maggie. Reception from 6-9 p.m. at the Melody Weir Gallery, 507 W. 24th Street."

Note that Maggie is Mary's cousin, not mine. In case you weren't sure. But I'll be there, trying to look 'sophisticated,' 'arty,' 'rich,' and yes it might even come to this.... 'hip.' That's what I'm told you are supposed to do at these things. You are also supposed to walk around going "hmmm..." I think. But I am not sure, as I don't know diddly about this 'art' stuff.

Also happening tonight is an awesome band called My Victoria playing at Sin-e at 11:00. I have yet to see them but their music is quite good (something like Morningwood or Pretty Girls Make Graves or Controller.Controller or Yeah Yeah Yeahs or even, dare I say it, Man in Gray - note the common link between all of these... badass female frontladies and often vaguely Pixies-ish but dancier music).

Super double bonus! Another tops rock show happening this evening is over at Crash Mansion, with those fine fellows of Morning Theft! Details are over at New York Underbelly. Mention Morning Theft and get in for free. Also, FREE BEER! That's right. The boys play at 10:30 (the show starts at 9 though).

Also this weekend: The Secret Life of Sofia is rocking their last show before a recording break from playing live for a few months so come out and see them at the Knitting Factory tomorrow (Saturday, May 14th) at the Knitting Factory Old Office with Nakatomi Plaza. 8pm. Should be an awesome show.

Sunday is the big Park Slope To-Do, the 5th Ave Street Fair! Unless it rains, that is. Come visit me at the record store if you're milling about there. Then afterwards, Bling Kong is playing at my house. Ok so they're not playing (though that would be pretty cool), but they're coming over for dinner and an interview. Sweet.

06:42 PM - Tiger on guitar!

I never really joined in on that whole phenomenon of bloggers peeing their pants over the Kelly Clarkson song, "Since U Been Gone," despite the fact that I really was pretty ga-ga over Ted Leo's acoustic version of the song paired with the YYY's "Maps." But don't be fooled, I surely could have been found sitting here with Garageband trying to come up with a halfway respectable mashup/remix combining the original track with Ted's version AND the YYY's song, along with some other surprises, but I just couldn't pull it together so I gave up (though if anyone wants to send me over some original takes from "Maps" without the drums then maybe I could finally pull it off.)

Anyway, the point is this: There's now a Kidz Bop version of "Since U Been Gone," as I'm sure you would have expected. What is important here is that there is a video, and the video features a tiger on guitar, a gator on bass, and a walrus on drums. That might be the most awesome lineup for a band ever. Scott is right, it's perfect anyone like me who'll fall for anything vaguely Animal Collective or Flaming Lips-ish (even if it IS just the costumes).

11:29 PM - further SY excitement

Not to make you think I have a one track mind or anything, but this is just too awesome not to mention...

At the Thurston Moore book signing the other day he explained the fact that he was wearing a suit and tie by saying that he had to go have cocktails with Hillary Clinton later... of course you'd think he was joking, right? Well apparently not! Check out the photos from that (Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Hosts Annual "Downtown Dinner" Benefit Event)!

For the lazy readers out there, basically Sonic Youth was honored alongside Hillary Clinton, Chuck Shumer, and the builders of the WTC for their "outstanding contributions and ongoing efforts to revitalize Lower Manhattan as well as their commitment to NYC's arts and culture." WOW!

12:31 PM - things of note for today.

First off, tonight Man in Gray and the Unsacred Hearts are playing at Luna Lounge. Free show. 8:30pm. MiG first, then the Hearts. Yup, another fun-filled night of hot Serious Business action at Luna (and really, definitely, without-a-doubt the last one!) so come party with us!
Mary shows some hardcore SBR love!

And now, a fun little activity that I'll call "Let's see what sort of awesome search results Subinev is getting (and turning up on the first page, often within the first couple results)."

MSN Searches

Google

Yahoo

Ok, sorry if that wasn't interesting, but to me it was. I swear this isn't a Sonic Youth fan site. Though I guess you wouldn't really know that this month, right?

09:56 AM - The Art of Cassette Culture

Here is a picture of me with my good friend Thurston Moore yesterday.

20050506-methurstonmoore.jpg

Thurston was at the Virgin store in Union Square promoting (and signing!) the new book that he edited, Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture.

20050506-mixtapeart.jpg

Thurston read a bit from his introduction to the book, and the crowd really seemed into what he was saying. While his poetry doesn't always make a lot of sense, when he writes articles about something he cares about it's usually pretty intense. Of course the problem with being a sort of cult hero to legions of super nerdy indie rockers is that when you open up the floor to questions about your book, nobody can open their mouth because really all they want to ask about is guitars and pedals.

20050506-thurstonreads.jpg

The book is pretty fantastic - I love the cover and I keep making people touch it because it's embossed to make it sort of feel like a giant cassette tape. All the artwork is great and the accounts of mixtapes made and received are a lot of fun to read (I especially like Glen E. Friedman's one about the time he had to get a tooth extracted. Yikes!).

20050505-3-reflecto.jpg

01:55 AM - from the ELR loft party

I didn't get many decent photos that weren't of the bands at the loft party a couple weeks ago (when was that anyway?) but I liked these two.

Here is Tina, making her dramatic exit via the elevator.

Here we have Peter and Oliver of Emma La Reina, relaxing before the party picked up.

01:11 AM - Photos from Jersey, a while back.

Kids obviously love video games. Especially when four of them can play at once and do their best to kill each other. Crazy.

Cousin Dennis really loves this game. I think that right here he is about to get sucked into the tv screen.

I think this one is supposed to be art.

05:16 PM - Shopping for cakes!

This looks pretty interesting...

CAKE SHOP is a Bar, Venue, Cafe & and Record Store in NYC. It's at 152 Ludlow St, just across from Pianos, apparently.

*Correction: Cris says it's on the same side of the street as Pianos, right next to the Living Room.
