11:00 AM - AFTER THE JUMP FEST 2008! Announced!

In a few short months, it will be Summer and that means the second annual After the Jump Fest! Bigger, better with even more acts and surprise guests, this year the festival takes place along side the city wide music event, Make Music New York (which itself is a part of the worldwide music phenomenon that takes place in 300 cities in 108 countries) on the first day of Summer, June 21st.

After the Jump Fest is the effort of 20 New York City music bloggers whose goal is to help new artists gain exposure while raising money for struggling school music programs. This year, After the Jump is teaming up with The Music Hall of Williamsburg and Galapagos Art Space for a festival stretching from noon until last call. In the next few months, After the Jump blogs will be making more announcements about the festival including new artists and pre-parties. Stay tuned and in the mean time, check out AftertheJumpFest.com for information on our past events and mark your calendars! It's going to be a doozy.

12:19 AM - After The Jump CMJ funtimes: Saturday, Oct. 20 @ the Yard

yardwebflyer2.jpg

By the time we got through the After The Jump Fest back in August, the future of the music blogger collective was uncertain, but in the past few weeks leading up to the CMJ Music Marathon (next week! ack!) the name has come back in full force with three shows during the (admittedly already) hectic week of (too much) music - even including an official showcase (Wednesday @ the Music Hall of Williamsburg).

I may be a little biased because I had far more to do with one of these shows than the others, but I'm really excited about it and would love to see a lot of people come out and enjoy the day we've put together for you.

Let's start with the venue: The first time I went to The Yard was August 26th, coincidentally the day after the big After The Jump Fest at Studio B. She Keeps Bees (pictured below) were scheduled to play at the venue that I'd only heard about briefly before when Landau drove all the way to Brooklyn only to find out their show with the Bjorkestra and Sex Mob there had been cancelled. What I knew was that it was outside and on the Gowanus Canal. Sure! That's enough to get me to check it out.

shekeepsbees-yard-1.jpg

The venue itself is just what it claims to be: a yard. There are trees and some rocks to sit on, a path to walk along, a barbecue area, and of course a small stage with views of the cool blue Carroll Street Bridge right behind it.

We'll start the day with The Lisps and Balthrop, Alabama and then shift gears a bit for Eagle*Seagull (one of this year's CMJ not-to-be-missed bands) and Rock Plaza Central, then hootin' it up for Old Time Relijun and o'death (a pairing made in heaven or hell - either way it's sure to satisfy) and finally White Magic. The Two Man Gentlemen Band will entertain between acts. They'll be the ones in the nice hats.

Metromix and Blog Fresh Radio are helping to make it happen.

Official post and details for this show can be found here.

Listen!
The Lisps - "Pepper Spray"
The Two Man Gentlemen Band - "Shotgun Wedding"
Old Time Relijun - "Indestructible Life!"
o'death - "Adelita (Daytrotter Session)"

07:52 AM - After The Jump was amazing! Thank you!

Official ATJF shirts @ After The Jump Fest - Studio B, Aug. 25, 2007 - click for the rest of my photos

There are lots of people to thank, and a big formal note should be on the way, but for now you can check out the photos I took (when I wasn't hiding behind the video camera) at the After The Jump Festival on Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Studio B. There's also a group pool where you can find photos from all sorts of people (and add your own if you have any)! Metromix (sponsors of the main stage - Thanks!) also have photos from the event.

Thanks to all the sponsors, bands, and my fellow bloggers who put together an incredible event - plus of course the Treats Truck and our day show host Sara Schaefer! By the way, Ryan and Chris made the CONCERT.TV stage sound great and kept things moving well despite obscene heat and lack of ventilation in that room - and the bands that played in there didn't have a dull moment (though it seemed like Bling Kong might not survive their set for a while there and somehow it turned into something resembling the fiery pits of Hell while Goes Cube destroyed the place). Great job!

The official festival shirts (pictured above) were a big hit - thanks to Econo Graphics for the making my scribbled design look good on bodies! Now if somebody could just figure out where that pile of shirts ended up...

10:59 AM - ATJ is tomorrow - NY Times knows what's up

This has been a long week (with some great shows - I missed Via Audio on Wednesday but Dappled Cities and the XYZ Affair provided more than enough awesomeness for the evening - despite a noticeable lack of slime) and it's not about to stop. It's hard to imagine that all the work we've put into organizing the After The Jump Fest is finally coming to a head with the big event tomorrow (and the pre-party tonight and after-party Sunday)!

Check out what the NYTimes.com (!) said about it (but note that this info isn't totally correct - the day show has been moved indoors along with the night show):

MUSICAL DO-GOODISM
Bloggers Walk Among Us

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em: two dozen local music bloggers take a break from speculating on just which Canadian side project will be the next Arcade Fire to organize a music festival this weekend. After the Jump features 15 indie groups you have read about (or soon will), including Locksley, Ra Ra Riot, Bling Kong and the Virgins. The festivities begin tonight with a rooftop party in Williamsburg and move over to Studio B for the actual show tomorrow. The free daytime portion of the concert is outdoors; the evening portion costs $14 (proceeds go to grants to fund music education) and moves inside the club. For people who can't tolerate being indoors after a week's worth of rainy day coop-up, check out the After the Jump concert cruise on Sunday, with DJ sets from the duo People Don't Dance No More. Go ahead, prove them wrong.

Have you checked out the mind-boggling list of prizes? The raffle ticket proceeds are all going to Donors Choose, which you can read all about here, thanks to Jeff and D.

Buy tickets to the night show!

11:04 AM - Start the party

I hope you're already planning to make it to the After The Jump Fest on Saturday - but if you really want to do things right you know you'll have to set the weekend up with something hot on Friday night, right? The official ATJ pre-party is a roof party (at 84 N. 9th + Wythe in Brooklyn) thrown by the Musebox, with performances by Luke Temple, Paul Duncan, Butane Variations, and David Bruno Djing. That's sure to be a good time, in classic Brooklyn roof party style - though I also have a non-ATJ show to suggest, and this one's not in Brooklyn. Nope, it's not in the city. Not Jersey either. QUEENS. That's right, Long Island City. Lariats (mems. Emma La Reina and The Song Corporation) are playing show number 3 at The Creek and The Cave and I wouldn't dare miss it (sorry I missed the first two!) From the live mp3 I heard, this band is hot and with just a tiny bit of luck they'll be huge. There's my prerequisite hyperbole for bands I know and like - though I'm not kidding, you wouldn't know from hearing them that they've been playing together for less than a year. Very good.

Then on Sunday if you're looking for something to do, She Keeps Bees (who wowed some people when they played with MiG + Gold Streets last week) are playing a show (which starts at 1pm) at The Yard in Gowanus. Sounds like a nice was to spend a Sunday (depending on how the Canal is smelling that day).

Oh and just to make sure it's out there and you all know what's up, here are all the details for After the Jump...

01:10 AM - Goes Cube interview by the numbers

Goes Cube drawn by Bryan Bruchman for Subinev.com

View original photo

The lineup for this Saturday's After The Jump Fest is a diverse one. Though some of the acts might not make a lot of sense together on your average show, getting to see all sorts of acts in one place is the beauty of a festival. If anything is certain, it's that Goes Cube will be the loudest band of the day.

I don't usually interview bands (though the Bling Kong BBQ&A was fun - they're also playing the After The Jump Fest Day Show) but I've made an exception here for the distinction of being the first (and hopefully, according to Dave, the last) to conduct an interview with Goes Cube in the most obvious manner possible: by asking them numbers. I figured that a band whose song titles are all numbers should be up to the challenge, and of course the trio came through with some hilarious (maybe a few too informative) responses...

Goes Cube - "Song 30"
Earfarm's video for "Goes Cube Song 34" - proof that they are great jumpers
* Stereogum just posted a new exclusive track: Goes Cube - "Song 46"

1. 24?

Dave: Hey, "Goes Cube Song 24" was the first song we wrote as a trio (Kenny
had just joined the band).
Matt: What is 3x8?
Kenny: Fucking horrible show on tv starring the guy from the Lost Boys.

2. 37?

D: According to Wikipedia, 37 A.D. was the year an earthquake destroyed
Antioch. But, also, according to Wikipedia, Stephen Hawking's nickname
is "Ol' Dick and Balls." So, you know...take it with a grain of salt.
M: Prime number.
K: The number of dicks Dante's girlfriend sucked in the movie Clerks

3. 2?
D: I prefer the more formal II.
M: Never heard of it.
K: My up-to-date testicle count

4. 88?
D: Show me a number that doesn't look better on the back of a football
jersey.
M: Fingers Louie
K: when Doc's Delorian hits that speed, "you're gonna see some serious
shit."

5. 11231?
D: BROOKLYN, WHAT?! CARROLL GARDENS, WHAT?!
M: Where I answer this from.
K: Roughest neighborhood in Brooklyn... and by roughest, I mean most
candy-assed

6. 11?
D: The thing is, Bryan, you're really coming at us with the hard-hitting questions. And I just don't know if I can answer something like this
right now.
M: I agree with Dave. This is too personal to answer.
K: My soccer number in high school... Also the age I lost my
virginity... just kidding... or am I?

7. 3?
D: Nothing compared to 23. Donnie Baseball, baby.
M: Leave it to Dave to admire a baseball player who is a goddmaned
hippy. Cut those sideburns Mattingly.
K: The number of guys in our band... also the number of "gays" in our
band.

8. 50?
D: Is that a request? OK, we'll play "Goes Cube Song 50" at ATJ.
M: What Dave said.
K: fifty dowwa bill... FIFTY DOWWA BILL!!!! FIFTY DOWWA BILL!!!!

You can see Goes Cube for free this Saturday at the After The Jump Fest at Studio B in Brooklyn. They're on EARLY. Hey, did somebody say something about Slagkicks?
